It's that most wonderful time of year! The in-person session of this event was a little outside my geographical scope, so I was only able to attend the online session, but I still had a blast learning from so many great teachers.
My magnificent peer, Baroness Margaret Lad, is a member of the Order of the Yew Bow and this class seemed an excellent opportunity to learn more about her chosen sport. Additionally, I've toyed with the idea for some time now of trying my hand at archery and jumped at the opportunity to find out what I might be getting into before dropping down money on equipment and supplies.
Macsen did a wonderful job sharing his decades of knowledge to prepare attendees to enter the world of archery! He most importantly explained where to locate governing documents for target archery within the Kingdom of Atlantia and SCA at large and walked through the highlights of the Target Archery Marshal's Handbook (both SCA and Atlantian) in a very newcomer-friendly way. While some of the more technical equipment terms were a bit over my head, I know I have a very good peer to discuss my newfound knowledge with for clarification!
I absolutely loved running the A&S tournaments at the Barony of Hawkwood's Birthday bash and currently serve as the Deputy MoAS for Hawkwood. This class was a nice refresher of all things A&S and prepared me for the opportunity to, in the future, serve as MoAS proper. Some new helpful information was the timing of reports and report requirements (also, useful knowing they are important because of our nonprofit status!).
Basic Accessories to Help Build Your Medieval Life
By Isabella Mea Caterina d'Angelo
One of my current goals to "up my game" is to work on the authenticity of my garb kit. This class was a wonderful jumping-off point for information on pinpointing areas to improve upon. Isabella discussed, provided documentation and extant examples, and displayed personally owned period options for headwear, footwear, belts, jewelry, feast gear, seating, bags/satchels/baskets, She also spoke on options for aprons. I appreciate that Isabella additionally discussed where she has found period-looking options for lower cheap (such as Home Goods, Dollar Tree, and Goodwill) since kit upgrades can be quite taxing on the budget. So many ideas from this class!
Scouting Out the Bead
By Lady Sindara Lind Rachael Fessel of the Falconshield
My last class of this session was a beautiful presentation on period beads. Due to my Norse persona, beads are a particularly important part of my kit and one of my personal favorites! I was truly astounded by some of the examples provided by Lady Sindara including a 130,000-year-old shell bead from Israel and 12,000-year-old shell sequins from Indonesia. This class covered the gamut from glass beads to SCA-period cameos! A wonderful way to wrap up an amazing afternoon of classes from some very knowledgeable Atlantians. Can't wait for the next University session in September!
